2012 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology
Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile in Chicago, September 6-8, 2012
Registration and housing are now open!
Program Description
The 2012 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology will offer valuable information on the multidisciplinary treatment approach for thoracic malignancies. This multidisciplinary meeting will promote interaction between the surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology disciplines to achieve the best possible outcome for thoracic cancer patients. The meeting will also bring together physician specialists from around the world for interdisciplinary discussions on the latest research and state-of-the-art care for thoracic cancers.
Speakers will address a variety of strategies to treat lung and esophageal cancer, malignant mesothelioma and metastatic cancers of the chest. In addition, the symposium will highlight the translation of novel clinically significant discoveries into clinical practice. Other educational topics to be discussed include the relation of molecular diagnoses, pathology and the clinical significance of targeted therapies in molecularly defined patient subpopulations for clinical trials and clinical practice.
Program Content/Format
The content of the meeting has been organized by the Program Committee with representatives from the four co-sponsoring organizations: ASTRO, ASCO, IASLC and The University of Chicago.
The program includes:
- General Sessions featuring interdisciplinary speakers addressing topics chosen for their applicability in everyday practice.
- Interactive Sessions in which audience questions on common issues facing practitioners today will be answered by leaders in the field.
Scientific papers for oral and poster presentations.
Needs Statement
According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 226,160 Americans will learn they have lung cancer – the most common type of thoracic cancer – this year. Lung cancer is the number one cause of death from cancer each year for both men and women. This multidisciplinary meeting will promote interaction between medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and surgeons to achieve the best possible outcome for thoracic cancer patients.
There is a need for translation into clinical practice of novel clinically-significant discoveries, including molecular genotyping. Additional education is needed on topics related to molecular diagnoses, pathology and the clinical significance of targeted therapies in molecularly defined patient subpopulations for clinical trials and clinical practice.
Elements of Competence
This educational symposium has been designed to narrow the competency gaps of patient care, medical knowledge, work in interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, professional standing and commitment to lifelong learning seven of the 15 core competencies embraced by the American Board of Medical Specialties, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Institute of Medicine.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Recognize the clinical significance of molecular genotyping of lung cancer patients.
- Identify the most appropriate initial therapy for patients with advanced NSCLC including those with and without a specific genomic alteration.
- Discuss the recent advances in radiotherapy and surgical therapies for thoracic malignancies.
- Recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the care of all stages of patients with thoracic malignancies.
Target Audience
The meeting is designed for radiation, medical and surgical oncologists, nurses, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, pulmonologists, scientists, residents-in-training, fellows and other health care professionals interested in the treatment, screening, evaluation and management of thoracic cancers.
